  • When you begin, you will need to wear loose fitting clothing, such as jogging bottoms and a t-shirt that will be both comfortable and suitable for physical activity. As you progress, you will be required to wear a 'gi' (pronounced G-ee).

  • We currently take ages from 12+. However, if you know someone younger who is interested in starting karate, we can recommend clubs in the local area who work with children 5+.

  • Tanoshi is very person centered, meaning your fitness and abilities will be taken into account as you learn. The syllabus is constructed in a way that gradually increases in difficulty and physical demands, with the idea of improving as you progress. However, if you're concerned, please consult your GP beforehand.

  • Being able to defend yourself from attack is complicated and can vary, but the more you train, the better equipped you can become.

  • We use a combination of Japanese and English but don't panic! There is a translation guide in our membership books, and generally English is used more prominently for beginners. As you progress, you'll pick it up quicker than you think.

  • Whilst traditional practice and etiquette is taken into consideration, we try to adapt to a more modern and relaxed approach. For example, whilst we do not complete formal bowing, we do bow when entering and exiting the dojo. As instructors, we get called all sorts! If you would like to be more traditional, 'Sensei' is a title of respect meaning teacher, however if you want to call us by our names that's fine too.

    Mainly, karate etiquette is based on respect and kindness towards others, and dojo etiquette focusses on safety and avoiding disruption for the rest of the class.
